On the Master-Disciple Tradition

July - Aug 2008

On the sacred occasion of Guru Poornima Parva (July 18), when we the Gayatri Pariwar Parijans, shall once again be pledging our wholehearted faith in our Gurusatta and an unconditional commitment to the accomplishment of his divine Mission, it needs to be constantly and gratefully remembered by us how fortunate we are to be the disciples / devotees of a rare Spiritual Master - Sadguru – who is hailed as the Yugarishi (Seer of the Age). He has, through his Bhagirath Sadhana, initiated the process of transforming the age of darkness (Kaliyug) into the age of Effulgent Truth (Satyug). Through his Tapasya, he has laid firm foundation in the subtle realm for such an integral transformation and has bequeathed to us the legacy of making his vision a concrete reality in the physical realm. Guru Poornima Parva is an occasion for us, the Gayatri Pariwar Parijans, to completely dedicate ourselves – soul, mind, body – towards furthering the realization of our Gurustta’s divine vision. The signs of the advent of the New Dawn are visible even now when darkness reigns supreme to the few discerning souls blessed with the vision of the Third Eye.

The Mission has pledged to complete a number of foundation level projects before the beginning of Gurustta’s year-long centenary celebrations – only 2½ years away from now. All the efforts need to be focused on the completion of these projects as a mark of our obeisance to Gurudev. In this issue we give a summary of guidelines laid by Gurudev for the Pragya Parijans which need our special attention.

Guru-Shishya Parampara (Master-Disciple Tradition) has been the preserver, upholder and nurturer of the spiritual legacy of the Sanatan Dev Sanskriti for well over a millennium – when it had been the victim of the onslaughts of alien invaders and oppressors. Guru is the Awakened Divinity, awakening the sleeping divinity in the disciple through his teachings, example and influence. Our Gurudev has been a rare synthesis of all the three attributes of a Sadguru. It is through unconditional submission to the Guru’s will that the disciple is able to deserve his grace. The great saint-poet Kabir has said, “It is the mercy and grace of my Sadguru that has made me know the unknown…..The Sadguru is great beyond words and great is the good fortune of the disciple…..”

Our own Sadguru has set before us the accomplishment of the unprecedented aim of collective transformation of the ego-driven and divisive human consciousness into the unitive cosmic consciousness. On this occasion, let us also remember with deep reverence another seer-sage of our times, Sri Aurobindo, whose birth anniversary falls on August 15 – the Independence Day of the Indian Republic. His seer vision of supramentalisation of human consciousness is almost identical with the Ritambhara Pragya of our Gurudev. This is what Sri Aurobindo said:

“What is then new that we have yet to accomplish? Love, for as yet we have only attempted hatred and self-pleasing; Knowledge, for as yet we have only accomplished error and perception and conceiving; Bliss, for as yet we have only accomplished pleasure and pain and indifference; Power, for as yet we have only accomplished weakness and effort and a defeated victory; life, for as yet we have only accomplished birth and growth and dying; Unity, for as yet we have only accomplished war and association - in a word, Godhead; to remake ourselves in the divine image.”

Prayerfilled wishes for all Parijans on the sacred occasions of Guru Poornima Parva and Janamashtmi (August 24). Also heartful greetings on our nation’s Independence Day.

Pranav Pandya

The process of germination of a seed and its growth into a tree is spread over a process a time. They hope in vain who have no patience and want to have the results of their good deeds at the earliest. Those unaware of the law of karma and its process of fructifying at the right moment, often fall in despair falsely thinking that sinners get away without any punishment while the simple and even saintly persons are denied. But they are not right. Every deed, every action has its corresponding consequence when its time is ripe.  The wise and farsighted never lose patience and continue performing their duties with faith and hope.
