Moral & Ethical Degeneration through Multimedia Entertainment Must be Checked & Positively Countered

July - Aug 2007

The slow poisoning of the minds and hearts of the masses through the perverse and pernicious entertainment dished out round the clock by the multimedia (magazines, music, films, serials of fast mushrooming TV channels, etc), if not checked and countered in tune with wholesome and ennobling progress is bound to lead to total destruction and dissolution of moral and ethical social order (Dharma – which maintains and nurtures a society). It is most painful and saddening that so-called ‘modern’ intellectuals  - the writers, producers, commentators, opinion makers – ridicule and figuratively call the opposing voices as the ‘moral brigade’.

Even the governments are at best passive spectators or at worst promoters of some of such programs – in the name of freedom of expression or display of performing and fine ‘arts’. It is now left to non-governmental organizations like Gayatri Pariwar to stand up and fight back this onslaught on basic values of our culture through positive action. Over the past five decades or so, under the instruction, guidance and personal example of our Gurudev, we have been doing our humble best in this direction through booklets, pamphlets, stickers, audio and video cassettes / CDs, etc for uplifting and inspiring patriotic and devotional songs, bhajans, kathas, etc. We have now resolved to further intensify and accelerate these efforts of reaching out to the masses, especially the youth who are the hope of the nation.

To this end we are also proposing to start our own TV channel to inculcate virtues of nobility, compassion, service, mutual caring and sharing in human hearts – ultimately leading to abiding peace and harmony in today’s violence, conflict, hatred and strife –ridden humanity. It will be our effort to make our program equally entertaining for elites as well as the masses. We have every hope that with the Divine Grace we will get the material and human resources for this venture. Apparently, the situation is grim, grave and daunting but it is also a challenge and an opportunity to high-minded and brave-hearted souls to join together and organize themselves into an invincible force of heroic warriors for vanquishing the hordes of Evil. The present densely dark times have also been called The Hour of God by Sri Aurobindo, the great seer-sage of our age. Says he:

“Keep thy soul clear, even if for a while, of the clamour of ego. Then shall a fire march before thee in the night and the storm will be thy helper; and thy flag will wave on the highest height of greatness that was to be conquered……”

15th of August this year will mark the 60th anniversary of Independent India. As if by Divine design Sri Aurobindo too was born on this very date in 1872. Like our own Gurudev, Sri Aurobindo had prophesied independent India’s destiny in these words:

“Spirituality is indeed the master key of the Indian mind; the sense of infinite is native to it….. The morning was at hand, and since the light has shown itself, it could never be night again. The dawn would soon be complete and Sun will rise over the horizon. The Sun of India’s destiny would rise and fill all India with its light and overflow India and overflow Asia and overflow the world.”

Let us then humbly contribute our mite towards the fulfillment of this seer vision.

My warmest greetings on diamond jubilee anniversary of our Independence and invocation of Gurusatta’s Blessings on Guru Poornima Parva for all our Parijans.

- Pranav Pandya
